Holubtsi Harvest Night at the Ukrainian Social Club

By UACC, November 16, 2011 12:27 am

Friday at 6:00pm – Saturday at 2:00am

Listen to the soft rustle of the bronze colored leaves. See the morning mist float over the river at daybreak. Yes, its time to harvest the holubtsi. (Holubtsi is the Ukrainian name for stuffed cabbage rolls)

On Friday, November 18, come to the Ukrainian Social Club for an event celebrating old world charm and the dreamy golden days of autumn: Holubtsi Harvest. Try holubtsi, an essential dish of traditional Ukrainian cookery. Resident chef, Mrs. H will have the windows of Buffalo’s oldest Ukrainian social club steamed up from 5:30 to 11 pm, serving handmade holubtsi dinners, along with other Ukrainian food like pierogi with carmelized onions and peppery traditional borscht. DJ Ihor will compliment the evening with obscure No Wave and indie rock created during the days of glasnost.

Lounge around at the club’s chic full-service bar, which features an array of heady Ukrainian beers by Obolon, along with European and American beer and liquor. As if that wasn’t enough, enjoy an exhibition of paintings inspired by Ukrainian heritage, by Lila Krehbiel.

Menu:

Holubtsi (cabbage rolls) – rice, meat & mushroom stuffed, with tomato sauce. Served with a classic Ukrainian lettuce salad, with onion (oil & vinegar) $4

Pierogi Dinner (six) – boiled dumplings with carmelized onion.
Choice of stuffings: potato, sauerkraut, or farmer’s cheese filling. $6

Combination Plate – Three pierogies and one cabbage roll $5

Ukrainian borscht with dumplings and mushrooms (cup) $2

Frozen pierogies to go (12) $8

To place your order for food at the Club, grab a menu from a table or the bar. You place your order at the door in the rear and somebody carries a tray to where you’re sitting or standing. Kitchen and bar is cash only.

Free admission. No credit cards. Family-friendly, but bar open to 21+ only with required ID.

Twenty years ago

On August 24, it will be the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the former USSR.  While this is definitely something to celebrate, it’s been a rough road for an independent Ukraine.  UK’s Guardian news website breaks down how Ukraine and the former Soviet countries are doing, 20 years on.  Click here to read the article and see the infographic.

Enough of politics!  Come to club this Thursday or Friday and celebrate an independent Ukraine.  Yuri H will be your host bartender both nights and he’ll be offering “Independence Pub Night Specials” and Ukrainian trivia questions. On Friday night starting at 5:30 pm, it’s your last chance to enjoy authentic homemade Mexican food prepared by Chef Aaron.  If you haven’t tried our summer Mexican kitchen yet, we promise you that it’s the best Mexican food available in Buffalo.  Hands down. And not too spicy.

Upcoming Events:

August 21
Ukrainian American Day Festival at Dnipro Cultural Center

September 10
DJ’s from Outer Space at Dnipro Cultural Center

September 24
Oktoberfest celebration featuring live music by the Auslanders

The Last Title

Dear Friends:

Years ago, two Ukrainian brothers promised their mother they would never fight one another.  Now, many years later, brothers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko have become world-renowned heavyweight boxers – who own titles from every sanctioning body. Except one.

This Saturday night in Hamburg, Germany, Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye (current champion of WBA) will contend in what is arguably the most significant heavyweight bout since Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson in 2002.  If Klitschko wins, the brothers will realize their dream.

The Klitschkos shatter every American boxing stereotype. They both hold doctorates in sports science from the University of Kiev. They speak four languages (German, English, Ukrainian, and Russian) and are elite-level chess players. Catch the fight this Saturday (July 2) at 4:45PM on HBO.

We’re rooting for Klitschko if you haven’t guessed already!

Ukrainian Club Schedule:

Tomorrow (Thursday, June 30) your host bartender will be Prysh.  On Friday (July 1), Rocco will be hosting. Our summer Mexican kitchen will be open on Friday, serving your choice of four Mexican dinners ($9). It’s the only authentic Mexican food you’ll find in Buffalo (unless you’re visiting the home of a Mexican…seriously). To compliment your meal, we’ve added Pacifico, a Mexican pilsner-style beer to the cooler!  So, come on down and bring your family or friends!

Rediscover Amherst Street Festival Recap:
Did you know that the Ukrainian-American Civic Center created a float, and participated in the parade to celebrate the Rediscover Amherst Street Festival (on June 18)?  Thanks to our amazing volunteers, the UACC float made quite the impression. Check out the photos here.

We hope to see you soon!

Trystero’s Farewell Show

By UACC, June 3, 2011 7:23 pm

With the Bloodthirsty Vegans and Rational Animals

8pm. $5

by Eric Kendall of Artvoice (Vol 10, No 22)

Dearest reader, it’s with deep sadness that I inform you of the untimely demise of Buffalo’s doom and gloom epic-core devastators, Trystero. While the circumstance surrounding this unfortunate turn of events are a mystery, it’s entirely possible that someone finally tricked them into saying their names backwards and in turn, sent them back to their own dimension. Other reports describe the band as taking an indefinite hiatus from music in order to ready themselves to collectively fill in for one of the four horsemen in next year’s much anticipated apocalypse. Either way, this is your final opportunity to witness the punishing blast beats from these cello-crust pioneers and also to pick up their final LP release, the Cold Machines EP +B-Sides and Blueprints.

Be sure to make it to the Ukrainian-American Civic Center this Saturday (June 4) at 8pm to help properly send off Trystero into their much-deserved legendary status. The Bloodthirsty Vegans and Rochester punkers, Rational Animals open the show. There will be no survivors.

Pierogi Love Night at the Ukrainian Social Club

By UACC, February 11, 2011 2:47 pm

Friday, February 18 at 5:30pm – February 19 at 1:30am

Perhaps it’s the very discomfort of the climate that makes Ukrainians delight in the outdoors. There’s nothing like a walk down the banks of the icy Dnieper River to make one crave the comfort of delicate pierogi.

On Friday, February 18 grab your ration cards, and head down to the Ukrainian Social Club for a ritual of late winter: Pierogi Love Night. Come eat the dumplings that are street foods in Ukraine and in the other countries of Eastern Europe. Resident chef, Mrs. H will have the windows of Buffalo’s oldest Ukrainian social club steamed up from 6 to 11 pm, serving handmade Ukrainian food like pierogi with carmelized onions, stuffed cabbage, and peppery traditional borscht. DJ Taras will be playing his Perestroika favorites – a mix of psych rock, old and new.

Lounge around at the club’s chic full-service bar, which features an array of heady Ukrainian beers by Obolon, along with European and American beer and liquor. As if that wasn’t enough, you can pose for obligatory photos with patriotic symbols, by artist and former plastynka (Ukrainian girl scout), Lukia Costello.

Menu:

Pierogi Dinner (six) – boiled dumplings with carmelized onion.
Choice of stuffings: potato, sauerkraut, or farmer’s cheese filling. $6

Holubtsi (cabbage rolls) – rice, meat & mushroom stuffed, with tomato sauce. Served with a classic Ukrainian lettuce salad, with onion (oil & vinegar) $4

Combination Plate – Three pierogies and one cabbage roll $5

Ukrainian borscht with dumplings and mushrooms (cup) $2

Frozen pierogies to go (12) $8

(pan-fried fish dinner and others stuff available too!)

To place your order for food at the Club, grab a menu from a table or the bar. You place your order at the door in the rear and somebody carries a tray to where you’re sitting or standing. Kitchen and bar is cash only.

Do It for Ditka!

Dear Friends,
Mike Ditka has done it all in his football career: All-State, All-American, All-Pro, Super Bowl winning coach, television commentator and Pro Football Hall of Famer.  Born Mike Dyzcko, his father was one of three brothers of a Ukrainian family in the coal mining and steel manufacturing area in Western Pennsylvania. Now a restaurant owner, he claims “You never know who or what you’ll see at my place.”  Funny, we feel the same way about the Ukrainian-American Civic Center.  Come on by and have a look!

Schedule:
Thursday, Orest will be bartending at the Club.  And on Friday, February 11, your guest bartender is Stevo.  As always, homemade Ukrainian food will be available on Friday, starting at 5 PM (eat-in, or to-go).

Pierogi Love Night is Friday Feb. 18
